About this Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority:
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (abbreviated as BIWTA) is an autonomous body of the Government of Bangladesh, which regulates the country's inland waterways. It is responsible for the regulation and development of maritime transport including the formulation, approval, registration etc. of various laws and policies for vessels. Its head office is located at Motijheel in Dhaka and it is under the Ministry of Shipping of Bangladesh.
In 1958, the East Pakistan Government established an association as the East Pakistan Inland Water Transport Authority. It was established on 31 October 1958 by the East Pakistan Inland Water Transport Authority Ordinance 1958 (E.P. Ordinance No. LXXV of 1958). At that time, the organization was formed to control, manage and develop the maritime transport sector of the region. After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, it was named Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority.
